In my experience, weight generally seems to correlate with strength. I don't know how much you weigh, but a 28/32h set should be plenty strong with ~500g rims provided they are built well.
FWIW you can run a 35mm tire on a narrower rim, like a Kinlin XR-270. I have a pair of those rims and I've never had an issue with that tire size. A wider rim certainly should be better, but will weigh more of course.
