Update: we ended up renting bikes for $75/week from Bike Revolution in San Diego. They were Bianchi Cortinas -- just simple hybrids with a triple crank and an 8 speed cassette -- and they worked well. Everything was well adjusted, the folks at the bike shop were helpful, the bikes came with pump, repair kit, lock, and helmet, and they were perfectly decent bikes (although we brought our own seats along).
