I've banned 5000+ spammers since I became a moderator (yes, really). Not all spammers are bots. We've had some spammers register a dozen users who did nothing but post drivel ("great post!"; "I like this!"; "Yes, you should get the bike.") while they used their signatures as banner ads for their websites or products.
Understood. What i've seen other forums do to alleviate this situation is to simply put a minimum character count per post. e.g. 10 characters so you can't simply post a "great", "i like this", etc.
In addition to that don't allow a signature until after 'X' number of posts e.g. 50 or 100 posts.
This will lessen the likelihood of those types of spammers from ever reaching their goal.
However removing features for users is just not a good practice e.g. No more youtube videos. I didn't see spammers spamming youtube videos.
