You said this is a dropbar mountain bike?
Of course get bar ends!
Dropbar mtb and bar end shifters work great together.
with the raised bars; you're going to be sending most your time with hands in the hooks, bar ends put the shifting easilly accessible.


and no; those old thumb levers are for 22mm flatbars; not going to fit a modern dropbar -24mm at tips; even wider at middle
You can get Paul Thumbies adaptors that come in larger sizes; but bar end shifters would be cheaper and better suited anyway.
