Oh wow, I didn't get an email update about this thread until today. They were going to be used with a Deore LX RD from the early 90's, but it sounds like the spacing is a little off and the a-3000 will only work with an Accushift RD. Also I don't think the steel bands would ever mount on my bar properly but that was my intention. The flat part (top) of the bar is way too fat. I don't know what to use to shift this thing. Bar ends cost a little more that I was budgeting but it might be the only way.
You said this is a dropbar mountain bike?

Dropbar mtb and bar end shifters work great together.
with the raised bars; you're going to be sending most your time with hands in the hooks, bar ends put the shifting easilly accessible.
and no; those old thumb levers are for 22mm flatbars; not going to fit a modern dropbar -24mm at tips; even wider at middle
You can get Paul Thumbies adaptors that come in larger sizes; but bar end shifters would be cheaper and better suited anyway.
