Seems like a good plan to me. I'd use the duct tape (or something equally 1.5" wide- masking tape?), because you can cover the entire spacer with one contiguous piece. With electrical tape, you'd have to use more than one and risk overlapping. I'm having trouble believing that duct tape and electrical tape are the same thickness though.
