They aren't. I just miked a piece of 3M Duct tape and a piece of no-name vinyl electrical tape:
Duct tape = 0.0090" (0.22mm)
Vinyl Electrical Tape = 0.0065" (0.165 mm)
So the duct tape is 33% thicker.
Don't we find out the weirdest things on this forum?
