What I normally take on a ride is
1. a spare tube
2. a patch kit
3. a frame pump
4. a multi tool with chain breaker
5. a tube of energy goo
For a bike computer, I normally use a cell phone with the Map my Ride app. I do have a wireless computer on a couple of my bikes for when I use the indoor trainer.
I consider a helmet, riding shoes, gloves and cycling shorts essentials, these cover the three contact points with my bike and protection for my noggin, these really important.
