We've had threads like this quite often - it seems that some areas have crappy LBSs, while others have great ones.

Seems I've been very lucky - 3 of the 4 LBSs in my area are excellent, and the one I go to is staffed with friendly, knowledgeable people. They get my loyalty, and I get their appreciation for it. It's a simple 2-way transaction - it's business 101.

I guess the only answer may be to keep hunting for a decent LBS, or become a DIY bike mech and an Interweb shopper.

I have to think there must be a business opportunity for someone to open an LBS in your area, and make sure the focus is on customer friendliness, knowledgeable staff, helpful service, and a good shopping experience. You'd probably close down the opposition PDQ.
