In the UK, there is and acronym for this: SMIDSY - "Sorry mate, I didn't see you," which is no longer an excuse over there.
On the question of visibility, I read somewhere that white is better for daylight and yellow/reflective for dusk/night. Anything is better than black, brown or gray.
