It appears that you replace your rear skewer with a long skewer that has special nuts on either end that the trailer attaches to.

I use a Trek trailer and it too came with a longer skewer and a "hitch" that attaches to the skewer on the non drive side that in turn the "trailer hitch ball" goes into.
