I've never bothered to protect the chuck and haven't suffered any consequences even though it get covered with plenty of muck.
No, I don't ride in much slop, so it makes sense as to why I've never had problems with the seals. I do recommend protecting the chuck however, especially since it is a $2 fix for a packet of four of those rubber tips.
