I guess it's whatever you're used to, and many people don't give STIs a proper chance when it is indeed a great product. Again, most products aren't designed for everyone, and this clearly is one of them.
Doesn't sound like you brake is positioned right. I just can't comprehend how badly your are shifting...I have one finger on the brake and the thumb working the shifter in both directions. My hand is always engaged and my left hand for that matter is missing fingers so I have less hand to grab with.
