If the BB has been in there since '78 I would ask then about putting new bearings in since tit is already out. I am sure it doesn't need them but a little preventative maintenance (PM) can go a long way.

Also since you torque the 'cups' against the BB and each other I would, and do, use the recommended locktite. I normally just use grease on everything steel and antisieze on Ti.
