That pretty much describes the issue here. The OP's Univega NuovoTech 450 came stock with Exage Sport 6 speed SIS derailleur/shifters. The current 105 Shifters are the Shimano SL-1051, 105 (7sp) with a matching 105 derailleur; as I said before, nothing a 7 speed freewheel would solve (well maybe)..
