Also I'm confused by what you are talking about in regards to stopping and starting. Its best to downshift to your favorite takeoff gear before you come to a full shop. That way when you take off, you aren't trying to immediately shift while trying to pedal from a dead stop. That is hard on the gears since you are putting a lot more torque to try to take off in a harder gear.
