nope, it was a 10 speed freehub. when the cassette loosened, the chain got caught between the cassette and spokes. unfortunately it will mean that all the elbows out spokes (7 of them) will have to be replaced and the wheel will have to be retensioned. Not that big of a deal but it's a good lesson that everything should be installed properly and tightened to spec.
