what brand/model shifter is this? is this a trigger or twist grip or what? If the shifter itself goes right past 7 and only stops in 8 or 6, then I'd be guessing the shifter is defective, a broken tooth on the ratchet or debris in it or something

btw, your front rattle might just be the suspension fork. cheap ones, sometimes the springs rattle.
