One of my bikes is a 44cm bike with a 50cm top tube. I mentioned that I put a 50mm stem on it and it made a big, big difference in my ability to ride that bike. I am 4'10.5". An adjustable stem was too long. I found one off of eBay for a fairly reasonable price. I was thinking of going with a 40mm but I couldn't find anything that I liked. I also do not find the handling the least bit twitchy and the bike actually is less twitchy than my Madone, which is a smaller bike but with a longer stem.
