If you want MTB gearing, buy a MTB crank. You can find numerous posts on this forums where people mate the Shimano M590 crank (~$115 with BB included) with a road FD and shifters. As cyccommute suggests, the Tiagra FD is quite popular when paired with a MTB crank. My setup is: Shimano ST-6603 shifters, Shimano FD-6603 front derailleur, Shimano Deore M532 crank (48/36/26), Shimano RD-6600-GS rear derailleur, Shimano 12-27 cassette, and a SRAM 10-speed chain. Works great on my Nashbar double-butted aluminum touring frame...
