I suspect that would be a reasonable low cost way of finding out how much of what you've experienced is due to those components and what the performance potential of the Tricross is.

I happened to look at a Tricross yesterday, while Mrs. Fred was at the nextdoor shoe store getting fit for some running shoes . I didn't see anything that would suggest to me that it would be performance limited, especially on flatish roads.

Do you have the disc or canti version? Light wheels for the canti version would be easy. Light disc wheels, maybe not so easy.
It's the version with cantilevers, it's from 2009 before the disc brake option existed.

I'm going to ask the owner of the lightweight bike if he has a problem with me doing a bit of mixing and matching between my bike and his to see how things work out. I'd want tougher tyres than he's got on his - if I can split the tyre wall doing nothing more than cycling along local roads I'll constantly be on edge so need something with a bit of resilience - but to find out what will make the difference a bit of swapping around seems like a good place to start.
