The Nexus & Alfine 8 spd I believe to be the same except the Alfine is set up for Disc Brakes. So far the 8 speed has been the most reliable and you can set it up for speed or hills depending on the rear cog & chainring you use. I'm running 42X18 =(2.4:1 ratio) on my Kona for a little more speed than my Motobecane at 42X20 =(2.1:1) My Sawyer being a 11 speed I have at 36X20 (1.8:1) set up more for hills but still has plenty of speed. I have 34t chainring I can change out if I travel to a real hilly area.
