I am driven by really painful intervals, but there's little benefit to pushing to failure on the last of every set of intervals. The training zone is the training zone, and if you're in the target zone, you're getting the stress you planned. If you're skipping intervals entirely, then it's more of a training efficiency issue -- you can get the fitness, but it takes more miles.
