Commute/mild touring bike in India
This is a semi-serious question. If I move back to India, I'd like to take a good bike back with me. The question is:
What bike (off the shelf or built up from a frame) should I take, given Indian weather and road conditions? If I go back I will either stay in a city where it rains a little throughout the year, or in another where it rains a lot 3 months of the year. The bike would mainly be used for commuting, and some light touring. Road conditions will range from good in the city, to terrible when touring. Flat terrain in the city, lots of climbing when touring.
Getting parts will not be easy (read: will be expensive), I will try to ship some spares, tires, tools etc. with the bike. Not too many good LBSes, so repairs will be up to me - and I've just started wrenching. Specially for wheel truing - I would prefer to get a really good wheelset build that I don't have to touch too often. Should I look at internal hub gears? 700c or 26 inch wheels?
Some more information - I'm not fond of drop bars. One bike that might work is the Surly Troll (with two sets of tires) - but that is just based on internet research. Should I worry about rust? FWIW - I currently have a Specialized Sirrus - base model - with bar ends, fenders, rack and bag. Fits me really nicely. Maybe I should just upgrade components on that bike instead?
Given that the bike will be mostly used for commuting I thought of posting in the Commuting section, but folks here would probably be more familiar with cycling conditions in India, hence posting here.
