looks like there's a groove for a snap ring to hold the free hub onto the shaft......i'm not sure if there's supposed to be one but it sure looks like it. I think if your cassette is tight on the freehub it shouldn't cause that much damage, mine's aluminum and doesnt look like that, especially considering its only a month old.
