I tried a bunch of derailleurs when I first started using that crank/ring combination and found that none of the modern stuff I had on hand worked very well. My guess is that modern derailleurs depend upon ramps/pins/whatever for smooth shifting. At any rate, out of desperation I put on a Nuovo Record front and found that it worked perfectly. Since then I have used Nuovo and Super Record units exclusively and can assure you that they work.
