I tried on a pair of Specialized winter tights and they fit like a wet suit and didn't breathe at all. I have no doubt they would be warm, but I wore them for no more than a minute or two and my legs were already sweaty. They wouldn't have been a good choice for something that you wanted to be able to take off trail side if the weather warmed up.
That's why tights come in different thicknesses. I've got a thinner pair of PI, a couple in the middle, and a Sugio pair that keeps my legs warm in the lower 20's. But those would make me sweaty in the 40s
