Bikes: Univega 900DS

Time for a change, but big time confused.

I currently have a Univega 900DS. Until recently I thought it was all I would ever need, then I started trying to ride trails. So now I am in the market for a new bike, but opinions vary like the wind, and I cannot locate a definitive comparison chart to guide my path. I have been reading the reviews at MTbr but that seems to have me twice as confused as listening to the sales guys at the local bike shops. I like all of the components on the Specialized Stumpjumper FSR Expert Disc 120, but the Mountain Cycle San Andreas looks like it might handle my weight better (225). I have also looked at the Giant NRS Composite 2, the Jamis Dakar XLT 2, Rocky Mountain Edge Slayer 70, and the Trek Fuel EX8.

Of course I would be happy to come in around $2,000, but would be willing to go as much as $2,700.

I am starting to hear some things more than once: Get Fox or Marzocchi shocks, Shimano XTR M952 crank, Shimano XTR or SRAM derailleurs, and AVID Juicy 7 Disc breaks. Again, the closest match seems to be the Specialized Disc 120.

Does anyone have any helpful advice?

I have been looking for three days now and am honestly getting tired to the point where I fear my purchase decision. On top of that I would like to pick “the bike” up tomorrow so my laboring on the hills is hopefully reduced.

Thanks in advance for any offerings.
