the 50 1.8 is OK if you stop it down a little bit and my 1d drives it plenty fast, but my 40D didn't. I had borrowed a 50 1.4 for a short while and hated it. For whatever reason, Nikon's wide zooms appear to be the bomb (particularly that 14-24G) but Canon's big whites are fantastic. If I could only have one lens, it'd be my 70-200 f2.8.
I've had a few MF 50s, my Pentax was okay but I liked the C/Y Zeiss much more. In the end, though, I'm not a fan of the 50mm FoV on a FF camera, so I went back to the 35mm-ish range. Unfortunately, at 35mm, I can't focus by eye for **** and stop-down metering was an additional pain in the butt so I sold my MF glass there, too.
I'm on the opposite end of the spectrum - I prefer wide. Sold my 70-200 f/4L IS and never looked back. If I could only have one lens, it'd be the 35 f/1.4L, though I'd survive with the 16-35 f/2.8L.
