Hey Scrod it's been a while but I'm rehabbing an old 1990s Giant Rincon. I ran into some trouble, basically it's a 1" threaded stem and if I tighten down the bolts a lot. Turning the handlebars get's really rough, If I don't snug them enough I can move the whole stem/handlebars if I lock my knees onto the front wheel while turning the bars. What am I suppose to tighten? I know this isn't the mountain bike section but I know you better than those guys I can ask over there if you want me to. First of all - those ****ing pics, man!
Did you disassemble/clean/regrease the headset before all this stuff? If not, do that. Then, look up how to adjust a threaded headset. UNless the bearings, races and/or cups are damaged or worn, you shouldn't have too much trouble.
