For the industry to be just adding another cog every 5 years to obsolete the previous generation of stuff is frankly pretty lame. We passed through the point of diminishing returns at 9 gears. Most of my bikes feature 2 x 7 gearing, which is more than enough unless I am doing loaded touring or competing in UCI crits.
