Google uses USGS satellite imagery, but Google does not allow the user to zoom to the maximum resolution. I have used the same imagery from this site:
http://terraservice.net/default.aspx in combination with the Pedometer to get a better view. Also, most of the USGS satellite views GoogleMaps use seem to be from 2002.
