Most lubes have a solvent carrier. That will clean while you apply and rub.
That's all I ever bother doing.
If I do pull a chain I have tall "Ball" canning jars that I fill with order less mineral spirits. Put the chain in, shake, pull chain out, wipe down and install. Lube before riding the next day after everything has evaporated.
Life is too short to be anal about chain cleaning.
Funny you mention that. I used to do the same thing until I was shaking the jar, it got slippery, and I threw the thing on my garage floor like I thought it was going to bounce back up to me. You should have seen my five year-old's face; it was awesome. Not telling you it's a bad idea, just that I'm a dumbass. Now I use an empty 1 liter Diet Pepsi bottle.
