I just had the bike shop put on a set of 2012 Mavic Ksyrium Elite wheels and went for my first ride this morning. 5 miles into the ride my front tube popped and I stopped to fix the flat. Hole in the tub at the valve stem. After I got the front wheel back on I felt my back tire and it was almost totally flat. I took it off and found two very small holes at the valve stem. I looks like both were caused by rubbing on the sharp edge of the hole in the inner rim. I had pumped my tires up to 120 lbs which is my usual pressure but it obviously caused the tube to press against the edge of the hole enough to cut it. I'm going with the tape around the hole and try the method of screwing the retainer nut on first before installing the tub. Sounds like a great solution. Thanks!!
I hope that works for you, but why are you inflating your tires to 120PSI? I think that's too much unless you are on a velodrome.
