I have used those in the past, and can't comment definitively. But I would tend to blame the cord, unless it's somehow getting jammed in between the pulley and the housing on occasion. I have re-threaded mine with nylon cord, and was using it as a work stand for awhile. I don't think those original cords were made for a lot of upping and downing. My 2 cents.
