I'm sorry, that's bad advice. I set up the chain to be as long as possible, putting it in small/small and setting it so the derailleur is just under a little tension there.

If you ride enough (especially if you push yourself), you'll probably end up in the big/big at some point. Hey I probably use the big/big once a ride to avoid going into small ring up short hills. It's not the end of the world with a proper length chain. With a short chain you can damage the wheel/derailleur/chain/sprocket/chainrings.. and leave yourself stranded possibly. I've seen it happen.

Try a short chain on your bike and try to go from your front small rear big to the front big and let me know what happens.
