There's more information on this incident.
The four lane highway exit in question is quite long and ends at a T-intersection with two lanes turning left (north) and two turning right onto Kennedy Road. (One of the right lanes can also go straight, into a shopping mall).
Apparently this cyclist had been riding north on Kennedy on the west sidewalk and was crossing the intersection on a pedestrian crosswalk when a car went through the red light and struck him and several other vehicles.
There has been a lot of talk here about salmoning and sidewalk riding and it seems this is a clear example of the concerns. Of course the direct responsibility (and blame) must lie with a drunk driver who goes through a red light but it seems likely this man might be alive had he been riding on the road and on the right side of the street.
Nonetheless a 32-year-old father of two was killed cycling home from a soccer practice, a very sad situation that should never have happened. There is a memorial ride tomorrow from downtown to the accident site (about 15 miles) and I plan to ride along.
