If you buy off CL, meet the seller at a bike shop. Let the bike shop give you the ok on the bike. Test ride the bike, before you buy it. Make sure it fits and rides good. People get ripped off on CL too!
If you don't have many hills, you could get a single speed and look cool.
I've seen some decent single speeds for around $300 on Bikesdirect, Nashbar, and Performance.
