Would you consider a banjolele (banjo/ukulele)? It's NOT a banjo (four strings only/different tuning), but if it's just to have some music with you, perhaps this might be a good time to explore a new instrument.

That said, a banjolele is pretty heavy, too, but it's MUCH smaller than a banjo. It's a start, anyway!
