I moved the front rim to the rear (I had some trouble finding 36h rims), reusing the rear spokes and hub. I'm on a borrowed 32h front wheel right now.

Now I realize why the rear wheel could never keep true. It went intolerably out of whack twice in 1500km before I discovered the cracks.
The wheel experts like Jobst Brandt will tell you that wheel components are rarely damaged from excessive tension. Impact and/or underdesigned rims are usually the problems.
