Here's a thought; you could use a reusable link from a wider chain to check for length, or maybe just any incomplete master link with two pins on one plate. Then you could work your way shorter.
That's not crazy. Just make sure that the reusable link won't get stuck in your rear derailleur (I wouldn't think it would, but...)
