From: Wherever u see a fred, I am there.
I can't do exercise for exercise's sake- it's GOT to be fun!

I like being in motion.
I like it not costing me anything, except calories.
I like the freedom.
I like the solitude.
I like the scenery.

I suffered on the hills at first...but I knew it was just temporary. After a year of riding now, the hills are no longer killin me, and my rides are much more enjoyable.

I still struggle on a few hills...but I keep at it to conquer them, and to be able to ride anywhere around my area that I want to; to know that I can do it; that there is no hill to which I must say "I can't ride up that!".

But...the average ride for me is only 25 miles. Going up mountains or doing long grueling hundreds of miles is another story- and when I see people doing that, I ask the same questions as the OP.

I saw a video on Youtube of a guy who was riding across the country......I thought: After the first day, I'd be sick of that, and dreading it! I couldn't even imagine the horror of riding 100+ miles a day....and living like a homeless person. I could only picture myself 750 miles away from home...just wishing it would end....and being really depressed about many more days of such drudgery to come before I'd get to my destination.

I dunno- it's like people today are manic or obsessive-compulsive or something. They can't just have one bike...they have to have 30. They can't just ride a few miles and enjoy being outdoors and getting some exercise..they have to ride 100 miles. They can't just integrate cycling into their life...they have to make their lives revolve around cycling.....

I'm with the OP- I just don't get it.

Nor do I get why anyone [regardless of how much money they have] would pay $10,000 for a BICYCLE.
