Except for the battery issue I see no reason to have a dedicated unit. Instead, I use at least as much space/weight for the batteries :-). W/ the two batteries I'm taking I should have to plug in more than every three or four days, minimum, even if the phone is on all the time. State parks, and sadly a few RV parks, so plenty of power.
Well - thanks for clearing that up. Initially as well as no phone specifics, there was no destination posted and no indication that you had any external batteries. In Canada there are no roaming charges either as long as I stay in the country - but all I have to do is cross over the border to bicycle Smuggler's Notch in Vermont and all that changes. Thats only 125 km away. And some of my trips have taken me to Colombia and Peru.

What kind of battery are you using yourself? My external battery is just an iPhone specific morphie juice pack with a 1500 mAh capacity and I thought that was pretty typical for an auxilary iPhone battery. Ocassionally I use specialized larger capacity batteries for offroad lighting, but a couple 5,600 Ah batteries will run 100W of lighting for a couple hours and thats considered lots of battery for a bicycle! You're using even more than that! 18,000 Ahs ??

Don't see why you were even concerned about battery drain, but recharge times must be interesting. Good luck on the trip Pete. When do you leave?
