I think, just forget about getting a workout when riding with a significantly slower rider. Consider it social, or base miles. The advantage of having this perspective is that it doesn't matter if the pace is slower vs just slow - 6mph, 10mph, 12mph etc all the same because you're not getting a hard session anyway, so you never get frustrated.
