I've been using lapping compound as a traction compound for 40+ years, and started suggesting it as carbon paste many years back. But being a grit, it has the potential to mar carbon parts, and many "carbon pastes" today are different, using particulate rubber or pvc plastic (or whatever) as a soft traction material.

But I still prefer lapping compound because of it's ability to bite into and lock two mating surfaces so they hold reliably at low clamping pressure.
