I might be about to get dogpiled for this, but on inexpensive bikes, I just bend the lever back, shoot the innards with WD40, and wipe off any excess.
Nothing to dogpile - if an quick easy fix works and does no harm it's preferable to try it, rather than risk what could happen with inexperienced disassembly.
