Because they are the purest form of speed racing. No teammates, no wheels to follow, just you and the clock, at maximum effort for about an hour. They are necessary for all stage racing, if you want a legitimate, overall champion. 135 lb pure climbers should not be able to win GT's by summit finishes alone, it's not a legitimate victory without the TT, IMO.

Granted, just watching one man pedal in the TT position for an hour is not the most exciting thing in bike racing, but adding the drama of all contenders, and how they relate to one another in terms of time IS exciting.
