I've been highly liberated by spiked platforms, "shin graters." You step on them on and pedal, no cleat clicking, no strapping, no special shoes. Don't like your toe-in? Lift yer foot and reposition. Aesthetically challenging, perhaps, but for bikes I ride, I value practicality over aesthetics. I'd say my primary limitation with platforms is I don't try to massively jump train tracks any more. Hard to get serious air without something to pull up on.
