I almost always carry a pair of pants where the legs zip on and off allowing them to be worn as shorts as well. Mine are made from newer high tech synthetic materials which are extremely light weight and they dry very quickly, a plus when they get wet or when you need to wash them as needed.
I have a pair of Columbia "Titanium" zip-offs. Besides the advantages you mention, they're nearly stain proof. One night we were having dinner and a mate knock a jug of red wine over and it spilled right into my lap. I thought the trousers were ruined, but I went into the bathroom and, after cleaning them with a couple of paper towels and a little water, they were like new again.
