+1. I pair of covertible pants is all I bring for off-bike pants. You can get some insanely light pants these days. Pay for a quality pair. I got a cheap pair from Columbia. They were poorly made and didn't last a year.

In the U.S. I have never bothered changing or putting anything over my cycling stuff when I have been on the road and, say, wanted to stop in a place for breakfast. Never been looked at funny or been asked to leave. I only change or cover up after the day's riding is done. When I toured Andalucia, I did put put more normal cloithes over my cycling stuff a few times when I went into restaurants or cafes (but not grocery stores) in the middle of a day's ride. And I never wore shorts when I ate out. This was for cultural reasons. Adults simply don't wear shorts in that part of the world.
