The cafe I visit on my regular Sunday ride is used by a lot of cyclists on all types of bikes and wearing all kinds of clothing. People like me in vaguely cycling/casual gear, some in jeans, and others wearing full team kit with bikes worth more than my car. Never found one yet who isn't happy to talk about cycling or bikes, including my retro rebuilds.

You are bound to get some snobs who look down on other cyclists (road or mtb), but that's because they're snobs, not because they're roadies

If roadies are on a training ride then I don't expect them to wave to, or even acknowledge, other cyclists, any more than I'd expect runners out training to acknowledge every other runner they see.

P.S. On the topic of hills, the UK doesn't have many of the long hills of the US or mainland Europe, but anyone riding along the coastal routes where Stapfam lives, especially other areas I know well like Dorset, Devon and Cornwall will have to get used to lots of steep hills in any distance ride.
